Germany and India, despite their differences in size and population, share a strong and dynamic relationship. India, with over 3.2 million square kilometers and a population of 1.4 billion, is significantly larger than Germany, which covers just under 360,000 km² with 83.4 million people. Both nations are parliamentary democracies and federal republics, with India gaining independence in 1947 and Germany forming its republic in 1949.
Economically, Germany is the world's fourth-largest economy, closely followed by India in fifth place. The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations since 1951, with Germany being a crucial partner for India in Europe. Their collaboration is particularly notable in the Indo-Pacific region, where both countries advocate for a rules-based order.
The partnership extends to skilled labor, with Germany actively recruiting Indian professionals, particularly in IT. Cultural ties are also strong, with a significant number of Indians learning German through Goethe-Instituts. Academically, Germany is a sought-after destination for Indian students, with around 34,000 enrolled in 2021/22, primarily in STEM fields. This robust relationship is further strengthened by over 30 consultation formats and joint initiatives for sustainable development, symbolizing their close cooperation and shared values.
